As a logical next step to obtaining ethical approval, a data collection is now happening. Hannah, a student in Mathematics, is undertaking it. She adapted a protocol that Jessica and I wrote up in 2015 (yes, this is how long it took for something to happen) to the limitations of this data study, namely, we don’t have access to a proper lab and chemical reagents for the enhancement of fingerprints.
BUT it’s not all bad; while we can’t use a variety of fancy development methods, we focussed on the purpose of the protocol, which is to try and reproduce the artefacts of crime scene prints in prints that we developed in research. The resuls are very promising! The two photographs below show ceramic mugs onto which fingerprints have been deposited in different conditions.
